AUGUST 2010 NEWSLETTER

Hi everyone and welcome to our August newsletter.  Once again we have lots happening…

SPRING INTERCLUB

We have 6 mens teams and 2 ladies which are now well underway.  On having a quick check of the results, quite a few of the teams are doing pretty well at this stage.  There have been no hiccups at all so keep up the good work.

CALCUTTA

We have had the biggest club nights we have had while the calcutta was running.  Thanks everyone for the support either by playing and/or watching the games.  It has been the most successsful calcutta we have run yet.  Thank you to you all for respecting the rules of the calcutta – I.e. the need to play on clubnights only.  The bidding night was loads of fun with the pool of money being the largest we have had.

WINNERS:  IRENE STIHL HERE LUNN AND WAYNE WEAR EM OUT WILLISON.

RUNNERS UP:  LILLI POND MATTHEWS AND BRENT RUN TO THE DUNNY CURRIE.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

24TH and 25th of September are the dates for our junior tournament who will include J5 to D1 junior players.  Please note all juniors need to be on the grading list and must supply and wear their own protective eye wear.  Thank you to our sponsors Graeme and Diane Rush – Trax Construction and Ian Manton – Imatec Solutions.

CLUB CHAMPS

Are to be held on the Thursday 7th, Thursday 14th and Saturday 16th October.  Prizegiving will be held on Saturday night – 16th October.  We are having the prizegiving and dinner at the squash club.  Please put these dates on your calendar.

KITCHEN UPGRADE

The committee have decided to upgrade our grotty kitchen and this will be happening within the next month.  We look forward to a smarter looking appearance for our kitchen.

CLUB NIGHT FUN NIGHT

September the 9th Thursday club night will be the battle of the railway line – EAST VRS WEST.  Those on the east side of the tracks wear something  purple, west wear orange.  You can either play in those colours, or come dressed in the colours or both if you like.  Let your imagination run wild!!

GOSSIP

CHRIS CRASH BURNELL – Give this man a wide berth in the carpark should you wish your vehicle to remain in tact.

As we mentioned on the website WE WON THE CALCUTTA – NAA NA NA NAA NA.  Wayne wear em out Willison defended his title for the second time.  And the old nag managed to sneak through.  No glue factory for her this year!!

SQUASH WAIKATO –  have announced their team for the Junior Nationals in Christchurch in October. Three of our junior members have been selected for the team -  Ben Rush, Alisha Tomlinson & Sarah Harrison as the non travelling reserve. Congratulations to all three.

Regards,

Wayne and Irene.

JULY NEWSLETTER

Hi everyone, sorry there was no June newsletter due to a few holdups but we are back!! We were going to wait after this month’s squash committee meeting but thought there were quite a few things that we needed to let you all know about sooner rather than later. First up..

INTERCLUB:

The winter interclub concluded well with our ladies and mens lowest teams being in a round robin (so no semis or finals played) both coming runner-up!! Well done to you all – Peter Baker and Melessa Henderson’s teams. We had 3 mens teams in the semi finals with 2 of those going onto the finals. Unfortunately the mens div one team bowed out in the semi final but was an awesome effort by them to get that far and the other two teams captained by Bryan Elliott and Brent Currie unfortunately losing their finals. But a great effort again. The two teams wish to thank the carload of supporters who came over to cheer them on.

The spring teams are in and the draw has been finalised and is up on the Squash Waikato website. We have 6 mens teams and 2 womens. Interclub starts next week – 27, 28th July. (hence the need we wanted to let you all know urgently).

A reminder to all playing – please if it’s a home game you and your team need to all be there at around 7.15pm. All bring a plate and stay if you can for supper. I.e. no turning up late and taking off early if at all possible. Also note that if you have indicated you want to play interclub you must be prepared to travel to all destinations be it 20 minutes away or two hours away.

KERRY MCKINLEY TROPHY – CALCUTTA

Thanks to all those who came along on Thursday night – it was once again a very successful and fun night with lots of bidding going on! The final 8 are playing this week – all on court one with the first game starting at 5.30 so be there to watch the action. There are a lot of people we want to thank – STU WITHEFORD – for helping Wayne with the calculations and formulas that needed to be worked out for each match. (I just sat, watched, drank and ate)! Not like me at all. Thank you to MIRIAM, BLUEY, WAYNE, IRENE. We were the ones who made up the form guide for you all to study! We had loads of laughs doing this. Thanks Miriam for getting it on our website so quickly and impressively. Thanks very much to JOHN PRICE – our auctioneer for the calcutta night. An awesome effort. Thanks for buying me Pricey – I don’t think anyone else would of!!

CLUB NIGHTS

Well as you will know we have huge numbers playing at this stage with this week being some 76 players. So thank you for your patience as it is hard with this number to keep the games on time. And also we at times cannot cater to everyone’s needs as to time preferences but we do our best. We have more players on a club night than what you could have for a tournament!!!! Probably from next week on we will possibly have to start the games alittle later than 4.30/5pm due to Wayne not being able to get there with calving getting underway and myself being at work till 5. But we will see how we go. So our last games may end up being scheduled at 9pm. Also please be on time!! Especially the players who are on early. If you are not here we will put someone else on. If you are late you put all the games on that court behind time.

MATAMATA MASTERS TOURNAMENT

This tournament came and went with just enough people entering making it worthwhile. The tournament ran really smoothly – thanks to everyone including our sponsors Matamata Butchery, Super Liquor Matamata and Farmlands Matamata.

IMPORTANT PARENTS PLEASE READ…..

Once again we are going to please ask you that if you come down for a hit and you have your children with you, please make sure they are supervised. On my coming to the club on Sunday afternoon, the court four viewing area was a mess. Chips and chip papers dropped on the ground, a photo from our photoboard in the lounge being taken and ripped up, the long rod that we use to get the squashballs down from the ceiling when they become stuck was also chucked on the ground with a child obviously moved a ceiling tile on court four. Behind court two was also a mess. When you finish your games please check the entire squash complex to make sure YOUR children have not left a mess. We don’t want to keep growling about this but we don’t see why we should be cleaning up after other parents’ children.

GOSSIP

Well a little bird told me quite some time ago now(funny I should say a little bird) that our Mooloo (who has been in the gossip column twice in a row now) made this beautiful bird aviary – pretty awesome apparently. So he got his birds and was all ready to put them in this prized piece of architecture when he realised he hadnt made a door into it! Oh well umm never mind.

A warm welcome to Shawn Watson – a new player this year and a new sponsor. His sign is on court 2.

Cheers, Wayne and Irene.

We will put this information up on the noticeboard for you very soon and will add more detailed info for you as well as the dates that the games will be played.

GOSSIP!!

 Ben Rush is currently playing over in Malaysia! I wonder if they have club nights as good as ours!!
 Ducky arrived at interclub on Wednesday with squash shoes but they were two shoes the same – both for the right foot. Ducky has squash and walking shoes very similar in appearance and so had one of each!
 Mooloo, come to Neil Reynolds Stihl Shop we have lots of protective helmets which you may find useful when playing interclub. Mooloo crashed into the side wall during an interclub match and nearly K O'd himself!
 Stu Gordon was coming home from fishing the other day when he felt a bump!! From the boat trailer – next thing is he sees his trailer tyre passing him as he is driving down the road. I wonder If Stu is better at catching fish or trailer tyres?

70’S FUN NIGHT

Thanks to all those who came along to our fun night last week. Everyone enjoyed themselves and Miriam has loads of photos of all the great attire people were wearing. It was great to see our members getting into the fun side of things. Also the small rackets that were used were loads of fun with some people being pleasantly surprised that they could even hit the ball!

Cheers, Wayne and Irene.

GOSSIP

Thanks James Buchanan, you are doing a great job emptying those bins for us. It’s a crap job but someones got to do it!!
Young Ben Slow Me Down Rush played exceedingly well over in Aussie. He competed in the Australia Junior Series where he started at 28th seed and improved to 14th. I believe his mother needed to come home to dry out! ….ok, right and next we have….
Nicole choker Bradley finally broke the dreaded curse that possessed her. She won. There have been two occasions at interclub where unfortunately she had match ball in the 3rd and lost in the 5th. Bugger. Shes a pretty tough job aye.
A little birdie has flown in and whispered in our ears…Andrew and Annie are engaged. Wahoo congratulations from us all. Did you know that we hire out the squash club lounge for parties!!
Noble & Lee – Welcome a new club sponsor – their signage is now displayed on court 3.

Well that’s it for this month, remember if you have any gossip that may be beneficial to the authors of the newsletter, just let us know.
